The Dark Knight teaser trailer

The Dark Knight is a 2008 superhero film directed, produced and co-written by Christopher Nolan. The institution logo for 'The Dark Knight' is DC. Based on the DC Comics character Batman, the film is part of Nolan's Batman film series and a sequel to 2005's Batman Begins. Christian Bale reprises the lead role of Bruce Wayne/Batman, with a returning cast of Michael Caine as Alfred Pennyworth, Gary Oldman as James Gordon and Morgan Freeman as Lucas Fox. The film introduces the character of Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart), Gotham's newly elected District Attorney and the consort of Bruce Wayne's childhood friend Rachel Dawes (Maggie Gyllenhaal), who joins Batman and the police in combating the new rising threat of a criminal styling himself the "Joker" (Heath Ledger).

Overall the film is set in Gotham city, where The Joker comes up with a plan to kill the batman; he does this by interrupts the meeting between the mob bosses and warning that Batman is unhindered by jurisdiction. The Joker issues an ultimatum that people will die each day unless Batman reveals his identity.

He targets Dent at the fundraiser but Bruce hides him and also tries to assassinate Mayor Garcia during Loeb's memorial service but Gordon takes the bullet and seemingly dies.

However, Dent and Rachel disappear. Batman confronts the Joker and learns each are in separate buildings filled with explosives. Batman finds Dent moments before the buildings explode, killing Rachel and scarring half of Dent's face.

Dent uses his burned lucky coin to decide the fates of those responsible for Rachel's death, killing some of the corrupt officials and mobsters involved.

The Joker gloats he has won, as the citizens of Gotham will lose their hope once Dent's rampage goes public. Batman leaves to find Dent as the Joker is taken into custody.

Dent lures Gordon to the building where Rachel died and holds his family hostage, as Batman confronts him. Dent judges the fates of Batman, himself, and Gordon's son with three coin flips.  It results in Dent’s death.

The trailer doesn’t open with the iconic equilibrium, this is because 'The Dark Knight' is the sequel to 'Batman Begins' and the disequlibruim carries on from this into 'The Dark Knight'. It begins with an establishing shot of the landscape of Gotham city. The mise en scene of the shot includes buildings with a figure standing on the edge of one of them. This shot fades into tracking around the building while zoom in closer to the figure standing on the edge. The shot changes to a birds eye view when the figure jumps. Through this scene sound of beating of a drum with long pauses between each beats, after each beat the longer the pause. This builds up climax and allows the audience to feel more involved into wanting to learn more. After this shot an editing cut is used. Throughout the opening there is a sting until the figure jumps. This symbols the climax and after this point the pace will speed up.

The opening then leads on to showing the audience who made and distributed ‘The Dark Knight’. This being by Warner Bros Pictures and Legendary Pictures.  The colour scheme of this opening is of a range of different shades of blue. This foreshadows what the film’s mood will be like, the mood being gloomy. The background of this shot symbols the iconic way of how an explosion is see in films, revealing to the audience what genre of film it may be. The institution logo also allows the audience to refer to other film made by Warner Bros Pictures and Legendary Pictures and the quality of their films. In the opening there is the use of editing between the showings of the two distributes, fade out of the Warner Bros logo and continues into a fade in of the legendary logo.

Throughout the trailer there are fast editing cuts and theme soundtrack. There are three different key points within the trailer that use this. The first being of a mid-shot of the most iconic criminal mastermind ‘The Joker’ explains his plan to other criminals. However before this shot a voice over is used from the same character. The use of purple and green representing the villain is a good example of Claude Levi Strauss Binary Opposition theory, being good vs. evil and the concept of light vs. dark. The next two scenes show the disequilibrium of the film. This creates the mood of moral panic. This can be seen from the police guard running off in opposite directions, but also introduces Barths Enigma code to the audience. The explosion scene symbol the turning point within the trailer and the film, where events being to enhance, yet the sound used doesn’t connect with it.

In the mid-point of the trailer, the audience is shown another turning point, shown by the gun shot. Throughout the trailer, there are good examples of Claude Levi theory on Strauss Binary Opposition, good vs. evil. This shows the audience that these characters are the main focus. There is a sound bridge, of The Joker talking/voiceover, used between the three shot, on the blacked out screen. These three shots are mainly establishing shot and mid shot, this allows the audience to develop a relationship with the physical information provided.
Over all after this point in the trailer, it symbols the good fight back. This is shown through voice overs of Wayne/Batman and Harvey Dent. This shows their point of view and there is a use of Harvey Dent’s catchphrase: ‘The night is as dark as just before the dawn’ this symbols light, but foreshadow that he becomes a main target of the villain.

The trailer ends in the classic way that all trailers do, with the title of the film: ‘The Dark Knight’ then editing such as fade out and then a fade into the release date.Barthes enigma code is evident in this trailer. This reveals to the audience so part, but not all. In turn this will lead to the audience wanting to go and see the film. However between these two shot there is an extra scene added in to grab the audience attention, for one last chance to make the audience to go and see 'The Dark Knight'.

The Dark Knight is based upon chaos theory. Chaos theory is based on three different elements, chaos, order and chance. This can be seen through the characters, their relationship with one another and their roles within the plot of the film. Anyone who knows the comic will know about the characters and what they represent, in this film, The Dark Knight, The Joker= chaos, Batman= order and Two Face= pure chance. some ways, chaos may seem good and in some ways it may seem bad. some simple systems move from being very ordered, like a homeostatic system that tries to stay at the same level all the time to an oscillator (a single pendulumm swinging), to a complex oscillator at the "edge of chaos" and then on to full blown chaos.
