introduction before reseach

My favourite genre of film would bean action, fantasy and science fiction film that is focused on the actions of one or more superheroes; individuals who usually possess superhuman abilities relative to a normal person and are dedicated to protecting the public. Most superhero movies are based on comic books, where the fantasy genre is most dominant in the medium's mainstream image. Often these films are Distributed by Warner Bros pictures and edited studio being DC Comics or Marval. For example DC Comics include bat:  Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, also Watchmen and The Punisher. Marval includes spider-man, Ironman, Fantastic Four and X-Men.

There are many reasons for likeaction, fantasy and science fiction genre, one being the narrative. In many action, fantasy and science fiction films there is a main narrative then there will be sub-narrative within the main narrative, like a giant spider web, everything links together. I like this because it allows the audience to be involved and they can make up the way they think the narrative may turn. This is the same in other genres of films. these films/genres are a good example of Claude Levi’s Strauss Binary Opposition theory. This being the constant creation of conflict/oppositions within the narrative and can be visual, for example: Light vs. Dark, Good vs. Evil and Control vs. Panic in the narrative.  One part of the narrative I find interesting is the way the iconic love story line is viewed in these film because they always allow the audience to question each characters role and can lead to a love triangle,  main being good vs. evil to get the girl.
The use of how the camera works, sound, mise en scene and editing work together is very interesting to me. Also the use of pace.  For example batman: The Dark Knight. This film doesn’t use Barthas Enigma code, but does use Claude Levi’s Strauss Binary Opposition theory,. For example in the title 'The Dark Knight', dark is seen to symbol evil and a knight symbols good. In short term the narrative is Bruce Wayne, played by Christian Basle, takes on the image of a bat (Dark Knight) once more to take down the most famous criminal mastermind The Joker, played by the late Heath Ledger.
One thing I like most about this film is there isn’t the iconic love end, where the good guy gets the girl. She is sacrificed to safe another character that may be more important in the narrative.
On the other hand the thing I love most about action, fantasy and science fiction film, would be the use of catchphrases. Taking Batman: The Dark Knight as an example again, the villain is the most common character to have a catchphrase. The Joker’s is ‘Why so serous? Let’s put a smile on that face.’  This is iconic because clowns are usually associated with being happy and making people laugh, which leads to his other catchphrase of laughing. There are also the uses of symbols to identify and represent a good  characters, for example a bat for Batman, an ‘s’ logo for Superman and a lantern for Green Lantern , the list is endless. Also symbols are used to villains as well, for example a Joker playing card for The Joker and a cat’s eye for Cat Woman.

Furthermore the director has linked common things within the narrative that occurs in the previous one being made. For example, Christopher Nalon who directed The Dark Knight regenerates The Joker from the 1989 film Batman, which was directed by Tim Burton, but had Jack Nicholson as The Joker and Michael Keaton. Comparing these two films, in the 1989 film there is the iconic love ending, where in 2008, she dies in the fight to get rid of the criminal master mind known as The Joker.

On the other hand, I do have some dislikes towards fantasy and science fiction film , hat be the lack of female heroes. There are female superheroes, such as Wonder Woman, super girl, black widow and batgirl, but many are side kick and don’t have change to show their story or they are many seen to be less strong so therefore they are pushed to the background instead of being put in danger

As well as creating my own teaser trailer, I propose to make other products like a front cover of a film magazine and poster which will link into the genre of action, fantasy and sci-fi film that is the base of my course work.

The potential target audience of my teaser trailer, film magazine front cover and poster would be for 16 and over age group. This is because of violent fight scenes and the use of swearing.

Professionally produced products already exit in promoting films are two main magazines Total
Film and Empire.

Other professionally produced products would be film posters, another was of promoting the film.

The likely skill needed in this course work is the knowledge in how to work photo shop to create the magazine, but also in creating the film poster that links to the trailer and front cover of the film magazine. Other skills such as being able to analysis, will be useful in help bring together what I would have to include. However the skill that I will gain would be how to create the teaser trailer itself, though using different camera work, editing, sound and mise en scene. While gaining this skill, I may come across some problem, but as I improve, I will be able to solve them.

This brief inspires me to be more focus on what genre to analysis before I start to create my own teaser trailer, magazine cover and poster. Also it gives me some basic ideas to think about while doing research.
